Liverpool transfer mooted for player after what he did in Everton v Bournemouth

Virgil van Dijk’s future at Liverpool remains shrouded in doubt as the days tick down towards his contract expiring.

While Liverpool remain hopeful Van Dijk will pen fresh terms at Anfield, the Merseyside outfit will have to have plans in place should he depart.

And in the view of one BBC Sport journalist, there may be a ready-made replacement out there for the Reds to snap up, having impressed against Liverpool‘s local rivals Everton on Saturday (8 February).

Liverpool should look at Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen

Writing for BBC Sport’s live FA Cup fourth-round blog [8 February, 4:19pm], journalist Shamoon Hafez suggested Huijsen could be a player Liverpool look at.

“Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen is only 19 but the Dutch-Spaniard is a real class act,” he said. “He reads the game so well and always seems to be in the right place at the right time to clear any danger.

“The former Juventus player is a cool customer on the ball too, bringing it out from the back in graceful manner, before popping it off to a team-mate. A future replacement for Virgil van Dijk across the city?”

Huijsen has been superb this campaign for Bournemouth and is already earning links with big-name clubs – Liverpool among them.

The 19-year-old joined the Cherries from Roma for a little over £10million last summer, with that potentially rising, which is proving to be superb business.

Given his contract expires in a little over three months, supporters are right to be concerned about what is next.

However, at the same time, there have been suggestions that a new deal may be close to being signed.

All fans can do is sit tight and await further news. At the same time, it makes perfect sense for Liverpool to keep tabs on future replacements, with Huijsen being one such possible option.

That is not to mention the uncertainty also surrounding Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, making for what should be an interesting few months on Merseyside.
